Tagging
Suntag is ANSA Qld’s fisheries research program. It is part of the ANSA national Austag research program and is a joint program with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries. Suntag is managed by Infofish Services on behalf of ANSA Qld Inc.
The concept of Austag/Suntag is to provide members of ANSA the opportunity to contribute to knowledge on key recreational species that are important to our members. Data of importance collected by Suntag includes tagged fish, catch and effort, released fish rates and hooking locations (where the hook is lodged in fish) that are used in assessing fish survival.

As at June 2006 Suntag has records of over 457,000 fish tagged, over 36,200 fish recaptured, over 11,000 fishing trips and over 30,000 hooking locations. As well as maintaining ANSA tagging data Suntag also stores data for projects involving tagging for the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries and Fish Stocking Groups. Suntag is now considered to be the prime database on fish tagging in Queensland.
Involvement in Suntag by ANSA members leads to a greater understanding of the role of research in fisheries management, a stronger commitment to the results of research and a more knowledgeable recreational fishing community. Information on the achievements of Suntag are published in an annual Austag Research Report, a Suntag News bulletin provides details of interesting recaptures and reports are available on a wide range of tagging projects.

Details of Suntag and how to become involved are available from the Infofish-ANSA website
