Sportfishing mourns the passing of Bob Carruthers

The Eleventh of February marked the passing of Bob Carruthers after a short fight against Melanoma. Bob was a secondary School teacher of Maths and Science. He was one of those Teachers who really cared and had a profound impact on scores of young lives. He was the kind of teacher that kids remember with fond affections all of their lives. His funeral on 16/2/08 was very well attended by Friends, family, colleagues, students past and present and of course Fisherpeople. The attendance was so large that it prompted the comment "that is only one measure of his success".

Bob was popular because he was one of those genuine nice guys that crosses your path all too rarely in this life. While fishing with Bob I felt that I could ask him anything that was science related and get an accurate, detailed and patient explanation. It was then that I started to realise why he was held in such high esteem by his students and colleagues.

As a Fishermen Bob was accomplished, experienced and passionate. He had over 70 Rods and Reels, and  Lures that were probably beyond estimate of quantity, weight or value.
Bob was very easy to be with. Bob was "easy company". His outstanding quality, to my mind, was his sense of humour. His smile was always easy and his style was extra dry.  Many of his fellow Members of Brisbane Sportfishing Club will well remember his antics as the conductor of our annual action. Who of us can't recall buying something that we didn't want or paying far more than we wanted? All in good fun.

I was saddened at his passing and it hurts a little when I think of him gone. But I remember so very many good times on the water and at the committee table. Bob not only served our Club well being president on 3 or 4 occasions and just about living on the committee for more years then anybody cares to remember. He also held office on the State Executive of ANSA Queensland and had invested in Angler Education for over 20 years. Bob was also an accredited Sunfish instructor.

Bob is survived by his wife Jenny who is also a respected educator. We are all the better for knowing Bob and he still inspires us to learn more, to do more, to be more and to be a better person.
