Community Works in with DPI&F Released Reef Fish Barotrauma Research
ANSA Qld affiliated Gladstone Sportfishing Club has recently completed a joint “sea” workshop with the DPI&F field officer Mark McLennan on the DPI& F Research vessel, “Tom Marshall” in the Capricorn Bunker Group.
This initiative is where science based research & community have banded together to carry out research in determining best practise in reducing barotrauma mortality when releasing key reef fish species. Target species include Red Throat Emperor, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Saddle-Tail Snapper and Crimson Snapper.

Weather conditions delayed previous attempts to get this combined workshop underway. Thanks to the persistence of Mark McLennan & availability of GSFC members the results of this team effort is highlighted with the following photos. For more detail about this DPI&F Project please log on to

There is no doubt that joint community & science projects will be the norm in the future. ANSA is proud to proactively align itself to community engagement within fisheries research & management. Congratulations to all members of the Gladstone Sportfishing Club for their commitment to this longer-term process & the DPI& F for recognising the benefits of these partnerships.
