Solution for Minkota Bow mount Electric Motor foot control connectors

Quite some years ago after several connection problems with my Minkota foot control I searched for a robust plug/socket alternative. Problems varied from no response from the electric ,erratic direction change , to damaged mother boards which are quite expensive. In most, if not all cases, the issue is water/moisture ingress into the standard plug/socket connectors. Evidence of this is green discolouration on the plug pins or socket female slots……sometimes the thin copper female socket sleeves completely corrode away leaving no connection path at all.

RS Catalogues ( an electronic/electrical mail order company) supplies an IP67 plug / socket solution. Those of you who are familiar with this mail order company, will also be aware of the Farnell catalogue which also supplies these same IP67 , 7 pin plug & socket connectors…….just a bit more expensive though.

It should be noted that the pin out configuration is identical to that already used by most members of the Gladstone Sport Fishing Club. This helps with sharing spare motors & foot controls. The other benefit is that if there are further problems with your electric or foot control it is then very easy to fault find with another fully functioning electric /foot control that is wired up identically.

Note: Cut the existing control cable as close as possible to the Minkota’s main mother board……you need every mm to terminate this cable to the new male in line 7 pole plug from RS Components. The new female free socket is terminated to the foot controller cable & the pin outs marry as indicated above. All individual conductors require soldering at each end to provide robust connectivity when screws are tightened in the new connectors. Trim back approx. 28 mm of cable insulation from the end.
