$109,707 for North West Qld recreational fishing projects
Three recreational fishing projects in Mount Isa, Cloncurry and
Normanton will share $109,707 in Australian Government funding for
hatchery equipment, fish stocking activities, and the establishment of a
fishing platform, Leader of The Nationals in the Senate Ron Boswell said
today.
Ninety six projects across Australia received a total of $3.6 million
through the fourth round of the Government's Recreational Fishing
Community Grants Programme which supports initiatives that enhance
recreational fishing opportunities and activities throughout Australia.
"Recreational fishing is a much loved past time for many Queenslanders
and I am pleased that this funding will build on the fishing facilities
available in the state's North West," Senator Boswell said.
"The grants will not only support locals who fish recreationally, but it
will also boost tourism and generate flow on benefits for the economy of
the community and the region as a whole."
Local projects funded through the latest round of the funding programme
include:
* $64,200 for the Carpentaria Shire
Council to convert the old Norman River Bridge (now a pedestrian bridge)
into a recreational fishing platform at Normanton.
* $40,887 for the Mount Isa Fish Stocking
Group to install three recirculation systems at the Mount Isa hatchery
to produce Sooty Grunter and grow out Gulf Strain Barramundi for
stocking purposes.
* $4,620 for the Cloncurry Fish Stocking
Group to construct a fingerling 'transporter' and assist with stocking
activities in the Chinaman Creek Dam and Corella Dam in Cloncurry.
Almost $10.6 million has been provided to date under the Recreational
Fishing Community Grants Programme for a range of projects including
boat ramps, jetties, educational programs, fishing clinics and rescue
activities.
"Round 5 of the funding programme is currently open for applications and
provides a further opportunity for community groups to secure financial
assistance for local recreational fishing projects that they would like
to see get off the ground."
The fifth funding round of the Recreational Fishing Community Grants
Programme closes on 25 May 2007.
