Weipa Sportfishing Club inc.
Weipa Sportfishing Club has 30 members on average each year. While our numbers are few we manage to catch a few fish, no doubt Weipa’s fish rich waters make this reasonably easy year round. By far our biggest emphasis is on participation and enjoying the social side of this great pastime. We have an Annual presentation night usually in early December as well as a BBQ each Month. Always a few secrets and techniques shared as the night wears on. We fish all line classes, i.e. 1- 15 kg and choose to release most fish. Limit the catch rather than catching the limit. Doesn’t mater what size your boat is there is a fishing option to suit all. Some members chose to lure cast 30lb braid, while others will drop down to light mono, so it’s not all about light line but like minded people enjoying their fishing Weipa has plenty of fishing options from light game fishing in the salt to fresh water species such as Saratoga and Sooties. We participate in DPI tagging Projects; at the moment we are tagging Barra, Fingermark, Grunter, King Salmon and Jacks. We struggle to have much contact with East Coast ANSA clubs due to our location, but we do participate in the Annual State Title competitions. We run the weigh-in, lure casting and cast net comps at the Annual Weipa Fishing Classic, July 20-23rd this year. We have had outings to various locations along the coast, a camp on the Beach being very popular

Meetings
We have an outing each Month with a weigh-in and meeting on the Sunday afternoon, held at club members residences. This date and location is always advertised in the local paper. Shift work prevents us from having a set date for each Month. So we try to mix the dates up to give all members similar number of comps off. We allow members to fish Thursday/Friday if they are on shift for the weekends outing. Annual Points are calculated on your eight best comps for the year, so plenty of opportunity to qualify.

Recent Trips
Shift work restricts us to only a couple of away trips each year. But when shifts do line up we head off down the coast for a camp and a bit of fishing. A get together around the camp fire under the stars with great company, doesn’t get much better than that.
