Ron Dempster Award 2001
JOHN DOOHAN
AND
DAVID BATEMAN
The Ron Dempster Award for outstanding contribution to recreational fishing in Queensland, for 2001, was awarded co-jointly to John Doohan and David Bateman from Sunfish.
John as Chairman of Sunfish, and David, as Executive Officer, have worked tirelessly for many years to promote the rights and priviledges of not only recreational fishing, but fish stocks and habitat to ensure the sustainability of our fishery for future generations.
Heeding the Sunfish motto “We fish for the future”, both John and David have helped to increase the profile of the recreational fishing lobby group and with the many regional branches throughout Queensland, also won the right to have certain geographically areas declared “Recreational Fishing Only” zones.
These battles have not been won easily and it is a testament to both these men that Fisheries Managers have had cause in the past to regret ever hearing the name “Sunfish”.
On more than one occasion the recreational fishing groups have had good reason to be glad that John Doohan is on our side, as he tackles issues head on and gets results.
John has been a member of the Bribie Island Sportfishing Club for many years, attaining both life membership of that club and the Eric Moller Award within ANSA Q. He was a former editor of Sportfish Queensland and a member of the ANSA Q Executive for many years.
David has been Chairman of Queensland Amateur Fishing Association for many years and was also a keen and active member of the Tom Burns Recreational Fishing Inquiry, ensuring the rights of both the fish and the fishers.
It is with pleasure the ANSA Q Executive chose to name both these men as the recipients of this great honour. |
