Don McPherson receiving the Ron Dempster award from President Marina Hoare and Ron Dempster himself

RON DEMPSTER AWARD FOR 1998 MR. DON McPHERSON

Ansa Queensland does not issue awards without a great deal of consideration and deliberation. The Ron Dempster Award has been issued on two previous occasions to persons who have brought great credit upon themselves without the slightest hint of self satisfaction. This credit has been as a consequence of the contribution they have made to recreational fishing through their actions and words.

This year’s recipient has moulded himself into a likewise category through his unending support and generosity towards recreational fishing. His support began unwittingly when he pioneered the first dependable pre tested lines. Don McPherson became a household name throughout Australia’s sport and gamefishing disciplines.

To demonstrate and explain the concept of his lines, Don travelled the length and breadth of Australia, attending seminars, tournaments, clubs and expositions, whilst never making his presence obvious. This low key and low sell approach endeared him to the conservative nature of ANSA members. Don sought more to educate the fishing fraternity in the structure and function of fishing line rather than trying to sell the product. After his departure, one was found stumbling over cartons of spools of line Don had forgotten and left behind. His generosity left one wondering if he actively made money from the sale of Platypus Line.

His support spread on a personal level as he became involved with a number of clubs on a one to one basis. At one time Don’s enthusiasm spread to a need for greater knowledge – and amongst other things, he was even found at the bottom of the Obi Obi Gorge studying the lost habitat of the Mary River Cod.

His realisation of the importance of worthwhile projects such as the Sportfishing Tagging Program (Suntag) have been recognised and for many years the efforts of the tagging achievements have been rewarded by Don’s generosity.

His support for recreational fishing, the environment, conservation and particularly by his continued participation in the Angler Education Program of Sunfish, place Don in the mould of the ideal recipient for our coveted Ron Dempster Award for 1998.
