Bret Currie
By Geoff Hodge
ANSA Queensland was fortunate enough to be able to engage the services of talented Mt Isa cartoonist and artist Bret Currie to attend the State Wide Conference this year, and with his wicked sense of humour and fast drawing skills, he certainly made a hit with all members attending!
Bret's first donation to the SWC was the original painting seen below, depicting the theme of the Conference - Youth is the ANSA. This approximately 50cm x 40cm framed full colour artwork is being raffled at a cost of $2 per ticket with proceeds to be used to further the theme of youth and the workshops that have been formulated to assist them. Tickets are electronically handled and can be purchased here or by contacting your Club Secretary, and the raffle will be drawn on or before 30th September 2009. Your ticket numbers will be sent by email.
The original has been signed by the artist as well as the participants, with the obvious exclusion of Eric Moller.
A total of 30 signed prints were made and all were sold at the SWC for $30 each, so anyone wishing to purchase one of these keepsakes can contact me here and I will contact Bret for further copies. These are a very high quality reproduction and are all signed by the same members as the original.

During the Saturday section of the Conference, Bret drew a number of quick sketches based on the Guest Speakers (as well as one or two non Guest Speakers!), and based on their topics and personalities, the results below were the source of a lot of laughter at the breaks in proceedings.
Bret kindly donated these sketches to be auctioned at the Saturday night social, and a good deal of money was raised, again to be utilised in the promotion of the theme of Youth as the future of ANSA Qld.
At his farewell speech before his long trip home on Saturday night to attend his boys footy Grand Final on Sunday morning, Bret strongly expressed his wish to be asked to return in the future, and it is with great pleasure that I can say that he will be invited back on an annual basis, and have sent him the invitation so we can be hopefully assured of his attendance for many years to come!

This drawing came about after the update by Judy Lynne from Sunfish
|
Dr. Michelle Heupel's discussion on fish followers was one of the highlights of the SWC
|
Another sketch that Bret completed while Michelle was discussing audio tracking of fish in Cleveland Bay |

 |
| Alf Hogan's discussion on Fish Reproduction - The Strategies...The Intrigue...The Survival of the Fittest, and this depiction of the hapless male Nursery Fish who has to carry his partner's eggs on his head, created some pretty obvious male chauvinistic rumblings! |
This one created a few comments after Alf's interpretation of hermaphrodites...both sequential and simultaneous ?!?!?!
|
Another one for Alf Hogan fans (all of us who attended I guess!) |

| The QPI & F provided a short promo movie on their activities, and the resulting sketch was taken in the manner it was intended...with a lot of laughter! |
I'll leave this one for President Pete to explain!! |
Bret's response to having to shut up shop and return to the Isa |
I've included a copy of Bret's business card below for those he wasn't able to get to on the weekend, so if you're after something just that little different, contact Bret for a commission pricing. Just click on the card, to see the larger image!
